Master of Arts in Educational Leadership
Western New Mexico University’s Master of Arts in Educational Leadership is designed to prepare the next generation of educational leaders—futures-literate leaders who are equipped to navigate an increasingly complex and rapidly changing world.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) defines futures literacy as “the skill that allows people to better understand the role of the future in what they see and do. Being futures literate empowers the imagination, enhances our ability to prepare, recover and invent as changes occur. The term Futures Literacy mimics the idea of reading and writing literacy because it is a skill that everyone can and should acquire—and one that is within everyone’s reach.”
Grounded in the principles of dialogic organizational development and generative change theory, the program prepares leaders to think beyond traditional assumptions and approaches to leadership. Graduates develop the capacity to anticipate emerging challenges and opportunities, engage diverse perspectives, and shape innovative responses to an uncertain future. Rather than relying solely on historical models of planning and implementation, futures-literate leaders learn to navigate complexity, foster adaptability, and lead transformational change.
The WNMU Futures-Literate Educational Leadership Program focuses on understanding the accelerating pace of societal, technological, economic, and political change and its implications for education. Through systems thinking, collaborative inquiry, and innovation-centered leadership, candidates develop the knowledge and skills necessary to identify opportunities within complex challenges and create sustainable solutions that benefit learners, organizations, and communities.
As educational systems face unprecedented disruption and transformation, leaders must become futures-literate to help their schools and communities not only survive but thrive. This requires a broader view of education as a shared societal responsibility—one that extends beyond schools and engages families, community organizations, businesses, and civic institutions in shaping the future of learning.
Graduates of the program will develop the ability to work creatively and collaboratively across diverse environments, build meaningful partnerships, and engage stakeholders in the pursuit of a shared vision. By cultivating strategic foresight, adaptive leadership, and collective action, they will be prepared to lead educational organizations that are resilient, innovative, and responsive to the needs of future generations.
Admission Requirements
Applicants seeking admission to the WNMU Educational Leadership Program must complete the WNMU Graduate Division application and achieve final admission status within the Graduate Division. Applicants must also submit an Educational Leadership Program application for program review and acceptance. As part of the program application process, applicants must provide an updated résumé, a letter of recommendation from their current supervising administrator, leadership behavior and professional dispositions self-assessment, a personal statement describing the applicant’s educational leadership philosophy and goals, and a faculty interview.

Program Components
The WNMU Educational Leadership Program consists of graduate coursework, clinical practice experiences, and performance tasks designed to develop ethical, reflective, collaborative, and futures-literate leaders. Educational Leadership Concentrations
The WNMU Master of Arts in Futures-Literate Educational Leadership offers four career-relevant concentrations from which students may select from: PreK-12 Educational Administration, Educational Teacher Leader, Leadership in Higher Education, and Leadership in Athletics.
